The roots of gluejeans lay in the design practice of fashion designers G+N (Gerrit Uittenbogaard + Natasja Martens). In 2005 G+N started the concept development and prototyping of its first pairs of gluejeans. Over a two year period the design was refined, the glueing techniques were further improved and the construction of the jeans got a complete overhaul. In the spring of 2008 the first pair of gluejeans was presented to the public, the #1. Later that year the #1 won the Dutch Design Award for best fashion design.
